World First Travel Insurance Blog - For The Most Comprehensive Travel Insurance Around

Unusual winter sports destinations? There are more than you may have thought. Ignore the crowds and find your own piece of powdered paradise with our slalom through two of the world's most unusual winter sports destinations.

One minute you’re dusting off your shorts and heading out to soak up those first days of summer sunshine. Then before you know it the cold has returned and Christmas is just around the corner. Don’t despair. It simply means it’s time to grab your goggles and Glühwein and head for the slopes. But forget about the famed resorts everyone’s already heard of. We want to spread the word about a couple of the pistes less travelled, but no less deserving of your curiosity if not an actual visit.

1. Atlas Mountains, Morrocco

Live two seasons in a single day by skiing in Oukaimeden. After starting the day with a sunny breakfast in Marrakech, make the hour long drive to the mountains and you can be hurtling down the slopes by lunchtime. 2,600 metres high in the Atlas Mountains, snow falls here regularly from January to late March or early April. Lifts carry skiers from the bottom to the top, but if you want a really unique experience hire a donkey and clip clop your way towards the summit.

2. Union Glacier, Antarctica

This is as authentic a skiing experience as it gets. Expect a big price tag, but when you touch down on a naturally occurring blue-ice runway and hit the untouched vistas of the glacier, you’ll be happy you paid. By day you’ll be tearing up the lift-less, lane-less slopes and by night you’ll stay in the sole accommodation on Union Glacier – a settlement of polar-prepared tents. Catering not just to skiers, you’ll be swapping tales and sharing meals with other polar explorers, from scientists to mountain climbers, in this remote Antarctic tent village.
